Intro + How To
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us at the 2020 Cinco de Mayo Fiesta. This event is built on the hard work of our whole community – more than 500 volunteers make this event a success each year! Please read about our volunteer opportunities below. Each includes a full job description and available shifts. All volunteer shifts are available Saturday, Friday, and Tuesday. We welcome you to help us more than one shift or day. If you have a volunteer position you love and have done before, let us know!
PGSCA Booth
Friday, Saturday, Sunday
- Shift 1: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
- Shift 2: 1:30 PM – 5:00 PM
- Shift 3: 4:30 PM – 8:00 PM
- Shift 4: 7:30 PM – 11:00 PM
Goal: Help give our guests a world-class experience by welcoming them into the booth, answering their questions, and bringing alive the miss and programs of the the Portland Cinco de Mayo Fiesta and the PGSCA.
Responsibilities
- style=”font-weight: 400;”>Greet Fiesta guests into the PGSCA booth. Show them the great work of our Fiesta host
- Provide answers and information to guests about the Fiesta.
- Offer tours of the Artisan Area and local nonprofit booths
- Act professionally at all times, on behalf of the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta and the Portland Guadalajara Sister City Association
Qualifications
- Spanish speaking a plus
- Outgoing and excited to talk to people your whole shift
- Standing and walking the whole shift
Details
- Most shifts are 3.5 hours, except Shift 1, which helps us get ready earlier in the day
- Volunteers will receive a Cinco de Mayo volunteer t-shirt, snacks and water
- This position will be walking and working in all weather conditions, especially if it’s rainy
- You will receive an email with instructions before the event, and then a full training with your site coordinator at the event

Information & Merchandise Booth (*NEW*)
Friday, Saturday, Sunday
- Shift 1: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
- Shift 2: 1:30 PM – 5:00 PM
- Shift 3: 4:30 PM – 8:00 PM
- Shift 4: 7:30 PM – 11:00 PM
Goal: NEW BOOTH – Greet our guests entering the Fiesta-side of the event, answering their questions and offering them opportunities purchase items that benefit the PGSCA, their mission and programs.
Responsibilities
- Greet Fiesta guests at the information and merchandise booth.
- Provide answers and information to guests about the Fiesta.
- Provide sales support of PGSCA merchandise. A PGSCA Board member will be in the booth at all times.
- Act professionally at all times, on behalf of the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta and the Portland Guadalajara Sister City Association
Qualifications
- Spanish speaking a plus
- Outgoing and excited to talk to people your whole shift
- Sitting the whole shift, if preferred

Fiesta Event Support
Friday, Saturday, Sunday
- Early Bird: 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM
- Shift 1: 10:30 AM – 2:00 PM
- Shift 2: 1:30 PM – 5:00 PM
- Shift 3: 4:30 PM – 8:00 PM
- Shift 4: 7:30 PM – 11:00 PM
Goal: Work with the Cinco de Mayo production team in creating and sustaining a beautiful and smooth-flowing Fiesta
Responsibilities
- Assist the set up and take down of Fiesta activities
- Join larger teams as we address important tasks or issues
- Walk around the Fiesta, removing waste and keeping the park litter-free
- Provide warm and welcoming answers to all question from Fiesta guests
- Act professionally at all times, on behalf of the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta and the Portland Guadalajara Sister City Association
Qualifications
- Cheerful, energetic, and communicative
- Enjoy working on a team to get big projects accomplished
- Actively walk, move and jump into work your whole shift
- Ability to repeatedly bend over and pick up objects
Details
- Most shifts are 3.5 hours, except Shift 1, which helps us get ready earlier in the day

Plaza de Niños
Friday, Saturday, Sunday
- Shift 1: 10:30 AM – 1:30 PM
- Shift 2: 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
- Shift 3: 3:30 PM – 6:30 PM
- Shift 4: 6:00 PM – 9:30 PM
Goal: Work inside the Plaza de Niños, sharing cultural arts and crafts with children and families.
Responsibilities
- Cultural Crafts: Work with children and help them complete their projects
- Help keep the area always clean and ready to accept more guests
- Provide information about Cinco de Mayo, on a kid-friendly level
- Act professionally at all times, on behalf of the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta and the Portland Guadalajara Sister City Association
Qualifications
- Cheerful, energetic, and communicative
- Spanish speaking a plus
Details
- Shifts are 3 hours. Shift 4 may go a bit later to help us clean up and get ready for the next day.

Face Painting
Friday, Saturday, Sunday
- Shift 1: 10:30 AM – 1:30 PM
- Shift 2: 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
- Shift 3: 3:30 PM – 6:30 PM
- Shift 4: 6:00 PM – 9:30 PM
Goal: Unleash your inner artist by painting the faces and applying Fiesta temporary tattoos to children.
Responsibilities
- Face Painting: Use face painting supplies and templates to serve dozens of children each shift
- Temporary Tattoos: Apply an assortment of Fiesta temporary tattoos
- Help keep the area always clean and ready to accept more guests
- Provide information about Cinco de Mayo, on a kid-friendly level
- Act professionally at all times, on behalf of the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta and the Portland Guadalajara Sister City Association
Qualifications
- No experience or artistic skills needed. All templates are easy to follow and the task gets easier with each child served.
- Cheerful, energetic, and communicative
- Spanish speaking a plus

- Shifts are 3 hours. Shift 4 may go a bit later to help us clean up and get ready for the next day.

Artisan Area
Friday, Saturday, Sunday
- Shift 1: 10:30 AM – 1:30 PM
- Shift 2: 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
- Shift 3: 3:30 PM – 6:30 PM
- Shift 4: 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Goal: Assist our guests from Guadalajara, who have traveled to Portland to sell their special, handcrafted items.
Responsibilities
- Greet guests and help them with their purchases
- Communicate the stories of the different artisans, their booths and their goods
- Help problem solve issues with purchases, or translation, as needed
- Provide warm and welcoming answers to all question from Fiesta guests
- Act professionally at all times, on behalf of the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta and the Portland Guadalajara Sister City Association
Qualifications
- Cheerful, energetic, and communicative
- Spanish speaking a plus
Details
- All shifts are 3 hours long, and we welcome you to help the artisans for longer, if you wish
- Volunteers will receive a Cinco de Mayo volunteer t-shirt, snacks and water

Student Assembly
Friday ONLY
- Shift 1: 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM
Goal: Assist the PGSCA in welcoming hundreds of students from across the Portland-Metro region to an exclusive and educational performance of the mariachi and ballet folklorico, on Friday, May 4th
Responsibilities
- Meet and direct busses into a swift and safe unloading of their students
- Guide groups of children and chaperones from the street and to their seats inside the tent
- Help escort out students leaving on buses, and help hand out lunches to those who are staying
- Provide warm and welcoming answers to all question from Fiesta guests
- Act professionally at all times, on behalf of the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta and the Portland Guadalajara Sister City Association
Qualifications
- Outgoing and excited to talk to people your whole shift
- Confidence speaking to large groups and getting them to follow directions
Details
- The shift is 4.5 hours long, and we welcome you to help the Fiesta for other shifts
- Volunteers will receive a Cinco de Mayo volunteer t-shirt, snacks and water
- You will receive an email with instructions before the event, and then a full training with your site coordinator at the event

Naturalization Ceremony
Friday ONLY
- Shift 1: 11:00 AM – 2:30 PM
Goal: Help the PGSCA host a ceremony and celebration for our newest American citizens
Responsibilities
- Set up and take down tables and chairs for the ceremony, as well as other needed tasks
- Greet guests and guide them to their seats
- Provide warm and welcoming answers to all question from Fiesta guests
- Act professionally at all times, on behalf of the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta and the Portland Guadalajara Sister City Association
Qualifications
- Cheerful, energetic, and communicative
